Benefits of Eating Organic Tip #2

This week continues our series on the benefits of eating organic with the second tip from Carrie Boyko of Organic Journey Online:

Because so many diseases and conditions have been linked to toxins and other chemicals our bodies, feeding yourself and your family organic foods is the most important thing you can do to work toward preventing illness. Let’s learn a little about toxins and food additives in this tip.

Toxins in our traditional foods are rampant. Here’s a short list of some common food additives or toxins: pesticides, herbicides, artificial food coloring, hormones, artificial preservatives, high fructose corn syrup, nitrites and nitrates, chlorine, aspartame, antibiotics, medication residues from reclaimed water used in irrigation.

During a lifetime, these toxins collect in our colons, tissues or livers. For example, High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS), a low-cost, man-made sweetener that is in most sweetened beverages on the market today, arrives in the liver virtually intact, and collects there. Our livers do not have the ability to break it down. Your liver is your body’s filtration system, removing wastes and impurities that cannot be digested. By definition, filters must allow material to pass through; therefore, a clog caused by one over-consumed substance will adversely affect the function of the liver. The mere fact that HFCS ends up in the liver is a sign that the body has discarded it, and therefore cannot use it in any nutritional way.
